Why we exist

Our purpose is the flourishing of smallholder farming communities, the living systems they steward, and the generations to come. Markets, transactions, and technology are means to that end — not the goal. We measure success by quality of life, not throughput.

Owned locally, built in common

Origins follows a cosmolocal model: the systems of production — land, plants, tools, ecological knowledge — are owned locally by the communities that steward them, while the shared infrastructure to bring products to market is built once and held as a commons. Origins exists to build and maintain that shared layer, never to own or control the local one.

Our first origin is the Wanakaset Symbiosis Network (เครือข่ายวนเกษตรเกื้อกูล), in Thailand's deep south — Thailand's first Community Enterprise Network, founded by 5 community enterprises practising integrated agroforestry across a living landscape.

Building community governance

Data generated by farming communities belongs to those communities; Origins holds it in trust and does nothing with it without their consent. As Origins works toward full cooperative ownership, we are putting in place the community process through which decisions that affect communities — on data, fees, and governance — will be made: consultation, periodic votes, and an annual general meeting. Origins' role is to enable, not to lead.
